Gateways and routers

Gateways and routers

Gateways and routers both serve as distribution and directing points in a network. Whether a device is a gateway or a router, its primary role is to ensure that data gets from one point to another over networks. Sometimes, a network may use routers both as endpoints and access-points, in this case, the router becomes a gateway. A gateway device often works with a router and a switch to complete the routing process. When a gateway receives a packet, it translates the protocol, and the router directs it to the next router.
