EIRP

EIRP

EIRP stands for Effective Isotropic Radiated Power, and is a measure of the power output of an antenna and this shows you how much distance and what bandwidth a radio transmission can be received at. It is measured in dBm. EIRP is a good way to compare different radio antenna combinations, even if they have different radio power levels and antenna gain. There has to be a cable between the radio and the antenna, and this typically introduces losses, so the shorter the cable or the higher the specification of the cable, minimises this. For example, if a radio has a power output of 20 dBm and you use an antenna with a gain of 5 dBi, the EIRP would be 25 dBm, assuming no cable losses.
