Spotlight on Teltonika RUT cellular routers and smart city use cases

Keeping pace with technological advances is more important now than ever for cities looking to implement smart city projects to effectively manage city assets, improve public safety and enhance their transportation and communications systems. Smart cities rely heavily on strong, dependable connectivity – especially those harnessing IoT solutions, and this is where Teltonika Networks excels.

Teltonika provides unique IoT connectivity solutions and cellular IoT devices to make people’s lives easier. The company has developed a product portfolio for global markets in the most complex areas of industry 4.0, smart city, and green energy with modems, gateways, routers, switches, and IoT platforms.

Teltonika’s RUT series of industrial cellular routers delivers robust, secure, and remote-ready connectivity for a wide range of IoT and automation applications. Featuring 4G LTE, dual SIM failover, VPN support, Ethernet and Wi-Fi interfaces, and advanced remote management via RMS, RUT devices are engineered for reliable performance in critical environments. At Cogent Distribution, we offer the full RUT range to help businesses build resilient, scalable networking infrastructure. In this blog, we turn the spotlight onto Teltonika RUT devices 241, 955 and 956.

Teltonika RUT241: compact and reliable

The RUT241 is a compact industrial-strength 4G LTE Cat 4 router with built-in Wi‑Fi (802.11b/g/n), dual Ethernet ports (WAN/LAN), digital I/O, and eSIM technology designed for robust IoT and M2M deployments. It supports up to 150 Mbps down / 50 Mbps up on cellular networks (plus fallback to 3G/2G), and up to 50 simultaneous Wi‑Fi clients.

Notably, it integrates a dual SIM configuration with one physical Mini SIM and an eSIM™ (SGP.22), supporting up to seven eSIM profiles and auto-switching based on signal strength, usage limits, roaming policies, or failure conditions. When combined with Teltonika RMS, operators benefit from centralised configuration, firmware updates, and remote troubleshooting.

Powered by RutOS (OpenWrt-based), it offers advanced networking capabilities, including routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, RIP, EIGRP, etc.), firewall management, VPN (OpenVPN, IPsec), load balancing, QoS, and DNS over HTTPS. Additional features: SMS/USSD support, web/SMS/email notifications, event-based triggers via its digital input/output ports, and robust failover options (Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, VRRP).

Physical / hardware specs

  • Small, rugged housing with SMA connectors (2 × LTE, 1 × Wi‑Fi), reset button, status LEDs, and digital I/O port.
  • Media: 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports; 9 VDC power input; DIN-rail/surface mounting kits available.
  • Processor: MediaTek MT7628, 128 MB RAM, 16 MB flash.
  • Includes PSU, antennas, Ethernet cable, SIM adapter, and Quick Start Guide.

RUT241 case study – smart‑city water management

In a smart-city water-management system for large buildings (e.g. schools, hospitals), RUT241 routers are used to ensure continuous monitoring of water hygiene, temperature, usage, and leak detection. Connected via bus extenders to up to 64 electronic fittings, sensors, and valves, the RUT241 provides reliable 4G LTE with automatic WAN failover to prevent data loss.

Data is sent to the operator’s server through RJ45 Ethernet, enabling real-time dashboards that detect anomalies, optimise water usage, and trigger alerts. Integration with RMS allows remote access, diagnostics, maintenance, and firmware updates, minimising site visits and reducing operational cost.

Teltonika RUT955: versatile and rugged

The Teltonika RUT955 is a rugged industrial cellular router featuring 4G LTE Cat 4 (up to 150 Mbps DL/50 Mbps UL) designed for demanding IoT and industrial environments. Equipped with dual‑SIM auto‑failover logic that switches on weak signal, data limits, roaming, or connection loss.

It offers rich I/O versatility: 4× 10/100 Mb Ethernet ports (1 WAN configurable), RS‑232, RS‑485, USB, micro‑SD, GNSS (GPS+GLONASS), digital and analogue I/Os, and built‑in Wi‑Fi (802.11 b/g/n).

Powered by RutOS (OpenWrt‑based), it includes advanced software like Modbus, MQTT, SNMP, TR‑069, NTRIP, multiple VPNs (OpenVPN, IPsec, GRE, PPTP, SSTP), VLANs, firewall, remote firmware updates (FOTA), and RMS support.

Hardware specs: MediaTek/MIPS CPU @ 550 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 16 MB flash; power input 9–30 V DC; comes with antennas (LTE, Wi‑Fi, GNSS), DIN‑rail and surface mounting kits, PSU, cables, and SIM adapter.

Though recently EOL (end‑of‑life) with final production in Dec 2023 and support until mid‑2028, it remains a viable and robust solution for existing deployments, superseded by RUT906 and RUT956.

RUT955 use case – remote IP camera access

To solve the challenge of after-hours surveillance, the RUT955 enables secure remote access to IP cameras and NVRs via VPN (or public IP/RMS), ensuring live viewing and playback from anywhere.

Key benefits include:
• Support for multiple VPN protocols – allowing secure connection to local camera networks.

• RMS integration: remotely configure, monitor, and manage both Teltonika and connected devices.

• Access via HTTP/HTTPS for live camera streams and email/SMS alerts using I/O triggers.

The router’s flexibility in configuring port forwarding, I/O-triggered alerts, and VPN protocols makes it an excellent choice for distributed security systems.

Teltonika RUT956: industrial and feature-packed

The Teltonika RUT956 is a rugged and feature-packed industrial 4G LTE Cat 4 router tailored for transport, smart-cities, and industrial IoT. The RUT956 offers up to 150 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink, with fallback to 3G and 2G. It supports dual‑SIM with auto‑failover for seamless WAN switching.

Featuring GNSS (GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS), 4× 10/100 Mb Ethernet ports (configurable), Wi‑Fi (802.11b/g/n), serial ports (RS‑232, RS‑485), USB 2.0, micro‑SD, and multiple digital/analogue I/Os, it integrates industrial flexibility. Running RutOS (OpenWrt-based), it offers advanced features such as Modbus, MQTT, SNMP, TR‑069, NTRIP, multiple VPN protocols (OpenVPN, IPsec, GRE, etc.), firewall, VLANs, FOTA, and RMS remote management. Hardware specs include a MediaTek 580 MHz CPU, 128 MB RAM, 16 MB flash, and support for 9–30 V DC with passive PoE input; it comes complete with antennas, cables, DIN‑rail/wall mounts, and PSU.

RUT956 use case – people counting in public buses

To enable real-time passenger volume data on buses, transport operators deploy RUT956 routers paired with TSW101/TSW010 Ethernet switches to connect counting sensors, cameras, ticketing terminals, and passenger info displays. With 4G LTE and automatic dual‑SIM failover, the RUT956 ensures continuous data transmission and GNSS for real‑time vehicle position tracking. RutOS allows custom configuration of the data acquisition platform (e.g., NaviFleet APC), enabling aggregation of sensor, camera, GPS, and ticketing data, streamed to the backend via LTE or Wi‑Fi at bus stops. This allows transport authorities to optimise schedules and fleet allocation dynamically, based on live demand. Its competitive pricing makes it ideal for deployment across large fleets.
