Solving remote connectivity challenges

Let’s talk about what we mean by remote connectivity and solving the challenges that remote connectivity requirements often present. Remote connectivity is where the customer can access parts of a network, across a wide area network, to be able to view, monitor, use, operate, change, or fix equipment that is not physically located on their premises. This is all possible through remote network connectivity.

Where remote connectivity is a requirement, it’s also important for organisations to offer support and maintenance, whether it’s their own support and maintenance or it’s an outside customer providing remote connectivity to allow them to get into the network and fix things that are broken. Obviously, your network and its real-time information need to be secure and so there will be levels of security built into it so that, for example, integrators may monitor CCTV solutions they have installed in customers’ sites as part of a package of support and maintenance.

Remote connectivity solutions

Cogent Distribution can solve the challenges surrounding remote connectivity and deliver point-to-point wireless links from a main location to a remote site. We can offer 4G, 5G, and cellular connectivity for the monitoring of remote sites, with VPN access. Also point-to-multipoint access to various remote sites for connectivity to e.g. wind turbines, solar farms, and in ports and harbours, for access to remote cameras and remote monitoring platforms. We supply these solutions from our global vendors including RADWIN, Teltonika Networks, and Perle Systems.

The HS2 high-speed railway construction project currently underway is an example of where remote connectivity is a crucial requirement. During any construction works, you may need broadband or internet access for site offices, but where you can’t install traditional fibre or copper broadband services, we can offer remote connectivity in terms of temporary or permanent solutions.

In an increasingly connected world, we talk about the Internet of Things (IoT). Well, the things we are talking about here need remote access so it’s all part of the IoT integration. It’s allowing you to connect to equipment that isn’t physically attached to your network locally. And in the future, there will be satellites as well. For example, Apple’s satellite feature already allows users of certain iPhone models to connect with emergency services when there is no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
